Telefónica joins United Nations to boost 'green' ICT

    • Telefónica and ITU, the main UN agency for information and communication technology (ICT), will organize two events to boost green technologies.

Specifically, coinciding with the celebration of ITU's 'International Year of Sustainable Energy for All,' a 'marathon' for the development of 'green ICT' applications will take place on 28 and 29 February in Barcelona.

Also to be held is the second edition of the 'Green ICT Application Challenge', where ideas may be submitted to promote sustainable energy use by 13 April.

The company sets up these activities as part of the work of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Climate Change in collaboration with Movistar Spain and the multinational's global platform for developers, Bluevia.

For ITU Secretary General, Hamadoun Touré, sustainable energy is "crucial" for the future of "modern civilization". "The ITU is committed to discovering ICT applications based on new ways of thinking and the right ideas to get the change we need to achieve a sustainable future," he explained.

For its part, the director of Telefónica Reputation and Sustainability, Alberto Andreu Pinillos, said that these initiatives are intended to support developers with bright ideas and to promote green ICT applications to achieve greater energy efficiency and sustainable development.
